Travel chaos continues...

As Mt Eyjafjallajokull continues to spew clouds of ash and dirt into the sky, European airports are once again shutting down and grounding planes, causing untold amounts of chaos across the continent. Travellers to Spain, Morocco and Turkey have been the hardest hit by Iceland’s force majeure. However, despite the current travel hazard most transatlantic flights are still operating, with the majority of flights having to take long detours; so good news for all of you out there heading out west to the Americas.

At the beginning of the chaos thousands of holidaymakers were stuck on the other side of the pond as all incoming flights were put on hold. Thou if you were going to get stranded somewhere you might as well get stuck in the sunshine state of Florida. There’s certainly a lot to do out there. A quick drive up north in a hire car will see get you to the hallowed realm of the theme park: Orlando. Or if that’s not your cup of tea then take a spin through the Everglades or head south and enjoy the sunny palm tree existence of the Florida Keys. Sometimes you just have to make the best of a bad situation, and if that means sunning yourself on a beach and missing a few days of work due to an ‘act of god’, then so be it.

Of course alternative travel arrangements are a bit easier for those stranded in Europe compared to those stuck in the USA. During the start of the aviation crisis there were hundreds of stories about holidaymakers hiring cars, catching trains, hitchhiking and turning up to ferry ports in droves. For those heading out to more exotic locations things weren’t so easy and millions were left stranded. In the last two weeks the majority of airports returned to business as usual, but with no sign of the volcano stopping, more delays and cancellations are expected.
