The world of internet retail...
Here’s a great idea for any of you cheapskates out there. When it comes to that special day, be it anniversary, Mother’s Day, Valentines or whatever, rather than buying your loved one a nice bouquet of flowers or a nice box of chocolates, instead just send them a virtual image. It’s all the rage nowadays in this increasingly anti-social social world. Yes, there’s no need to talk to people anymore, I mean why bother when you can just text or facebook them without having to go through all that awkward enforced politeness...
Yes the internet really has opened up huge avenues when it comes to abject laziness. Once upon a time you had to have a menu, make your choice and then spend 10 minutes trying to negotiate your way through a conversation with a Dominos automaton. But now, thanks to the miracle of the web you can avoid these agonising moments with the simple click of a few buttons from the comfort of your own chair and underpants.
The sheer scope of internet retailing has exploded in recent years. If you search hard enough you can literally find anything nowadays from T-shirts, to retro toys and even children if you’re so inclined. Yes the world of internet retail is certainly a strange place, but the market is huge; in 2006 online retail sales reached a whopping $200bn a year.
So while I’m off to find some tat to sell and make myself an internet millionaire, here’s something for you mum: Happy birthday....
