I’ve been trying to find a couple of really good video guides to Portugal, but so far I’ve been pretty unsuccessful, the only ones I have managed to find so far are ones narrated by Americans with drawling monotone voices.
I did however manage to find this little clip about the Centro region in middle Portugal. The Centro area is one of Portugal’s richest areas due to its diverse geography. Towards the Spanish border lies the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, a rugged and mountainous region on the east end of the Sistema Central mountain range. The park hosts Portugal’s highest peak, the Serra da Estrela at 1,993m above sea level. The whole area east of the mountains is crisscrossed by rivers, streams, and pine tree forests, making it an ideal place for those who enjoy outdoor activities.
If you prefer a more sedate beach life existence then don’t despair, because the Centro region has all that as well, as you can see from the video. There are several prominent beaches up and down the Centro region, located near Mira, Figueira da Foz, Ílhavo, Nazaré, Peniche and São Martinho do Porto.
As well as beaches, mountains and rivers, the Centro region of Portugal contains several large towns and cities including Aveiro, Viseu and Leiria. The majority of the municipalities within the region date back to either the Roman or Medieval era and are full of historic building and monuments. The capital of Centro is Coimbra, one of the oldest and most culturally exciting cities within Portugal.
Travel Plans
Getting to the Centro region is relatively easy to do, flights to Coimbra and other local airports run daily and are easily available.
Car hire in Portugal is also easy to organise, travellers are well advised however to book early due to increased demand throughout the summer season. For those feeling a little adventurous you can always take your
rental car across the Spanish border to the nearby city of Salamanca, but ensure that the hire car insurance covers you crossing from one country to another.
